Rangers Streak Ends

NEW YORK () -- The New York Rangers' home unbeaten streak has ended at 24 games in a 5-3 loss to the lowly and injury-strapped New York Islanders, who were playing without their top two scorers.

The Rangers needed a victory or tie Thursday to break the NHL franchise's record for consecutive games without a loss at home. But the Islanders, 37 points behind the Atlantic Division-leading Rangers and playing without injured scoring leaders Zigmund Palffy and Travis Green, won behind 37 saves from netminder Tommy Soderstrom.

Before Thursday night, the Rangers had not lost at Madison Square Garden since a 4-2 defeat by Ottawa on Oct. 22, going 18-0-6 to tie the club mark set in 1970-71.
