Quiet Kadannikov

The most important new face in the Russian government -- First Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Kadannikov -- has so far kept discreetly quiet. [On Jan. 31], he participated in a session of the state commission for financial and monetary policy -- one of the key governmental organs responsible for regulating activities in the financial sphere. Nevertheless he kept his mouth shut, not answering creditors' questions about the new, adjusted course of reform.

As noted by [Economics Minister] Yevgeny Yasin, one of the first to be granted an audience, the new deputy prime minister's one and only response to events currently unfolding in the country -- the problems surrounding the nonpayments crisis, current budget issues, price regulation on production by the natural monopolies and strengthening the government's control over the alcoholic beverages market -- was to call for a "sober approach."
