Pope in Latin America

GUATEMALA CITY () -- Pope John Paul starts a week-long trip to Latin America on Monday, his message of peace overshadowed by a failed attack on his first host, Guatemalan President Alvaro Arzu.

Arzu escaped unhurt Sunday when a lone driver in a pickup truck tried twice to ram him and his wife as they rode on horseback in the colonial town of Antigua near the capital, government officials said.

Interior Minister Rodolfo Mendoza insisted the attack -- which he described as an assassination attempt -- would not affect the Pope's visit to Guatemala.
