Poland Mends Fences

WARSAW () -- Polish-Russian relations should not be harmed by allegations that former Prime Minister Jozef Oleksy had spied for Moscow, Poland's Foreign Minister said Friday.

"I believe this unpleasant matter will soon be explained and it will turn out that we have more important issues -- trade, economic cooperation and mutual security interests," PAP news agency quoted Dariusz Rosati as saying at the start of a two-day conference in Warsaw involving Polish and Russian officials and analysts.

Also Friday, former president Lech Walesa said he knew of several leading Polish ex-communists whose secret ties with Moscow would force them out of political office.

"Here [in Poland] two or three such people can be removed from office every year," he said in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza published Friday.
