Oil Cleanup Continues

MILFORD HAVEN, Wales () -- Up to 30,000 tons of crude oil poured from a stricken tanker off the Welsh coast overnight but most of the spill was heading out to sea, coast guards said Tuesday.

The Liberian-registered Sea Empress, which had been carrying 130,000 tons of light crude oil, has been battered by high seas and gale-force winds since running aground last Thursday near some of Britain's most treasured wildlife sanctuaries.

Marine engineers said pumping operations to transfer the oil could take a few days and the salvage work depended on weather conditions easing.
