Mudslides Kill 40

RIO DE JANEIRO () -- At least 40 people, including many children, were killed in Brazil by recent mudslides and as many as 21 more are feared dead, officials said Wednesday.

As rains whipped the coast, 29 bodies were found in Rio de Janeiro and at least another 17 are believed dead in the city, said Elonides de Almeida Pessoa de Melo, coordinator for the city's emergency services division.

One couple was unable to save their two children, aged 4 and 8, who were alone in a hut when it was engulfed by mud. Seven other children were killed in the Vidigal shantytown after mudslides swept away makeshift shacks.
