Killer Tiger Called Ill

PARTIZANSK, Far East -- A man-eating tiger who attacked a couple in the Far East was ailing, Itar-Tass reported.

The tiger attacked a man and his wife 10 days ago as they were walking to a railway station in the town of Partizansk. The tiger injured the woman and killed the man, whose partially eaten body was later found in the forest.

Three days later, hunters tracked down and killed the tiger.

An autopsy showed the tiger was too ill to hunt his usual prey, the agency said Saturday. It did not say precisely what was wrong with the tiger.

Tigers have become rare in the Russian Far East, victims of poachers and encroaching civilization.
