Kill Wolf, Get License

MOSCOW () -- Russian authorities are trying to encourage hunters in the Far North to kill wolves by rewarding those who do with coveted licenses to hunt bears, boars, moose and other big game.

The program was introduced in the Komi-Permyatski district, about 1,100 kilometers northeast of Moscow, Itar-Tass said. It said wolf populations in the region's marshes and forests, at the foot of the Ural Mountains, have grown because local authorities ran out of money to give rewards for killing them. In one year, wolves killed more than 6,000 domestic animals, the report said.

The day after the incentive program was introduced, hunters brought about a dozen wolf hides to local authorities to claim the big-game hunting licenses.
