Khmer Rouge Attacked

KILOMETER 38 VILLAGE, Cambodia () -- Thousands of government troops, backed by tanks and helicopters, tried Friday to punch through a key Khmer Rouge position guarding the guerrillas' headquarters of Pailin.

Journalists saw two helicopter gunships pounding Khmer Rouge front-line defenses at Phnom Veng hill and heard artillery fire throughout the day.

A field commander said the Khmer Rouge had placed some 2,000 soldiers and seven tanks around Phnom Veng to block the drive toward Pailin, a distance of some 15 kilometers. The attack on Pailin is part of a government offensive in several areas of northwest Cambodia.
