Iraqis Start Trip Home

AMMAN () -- Two senior Iraqis who defected to Jordan but were shunned by the West and exiled Iraqi opposition groups left Amman on Tuesday to return to Baghdad with their wives -- both daughters of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

Iraqi Lieutenant General Hussein Kamel Hassan, who ran Iraq's secret military program, fled to Jordan last August with his brother Saddam Kamel and their wives. The lieutenant-general had called for the overthrow of the Iraqi government.

Meanwhile in Iraq Tuesday, the government described talks with the U.N. on partial oil sales which concluded in New York on Monday as "positive." But confidence in Baghdad's street markets plummeted as news spread that the talks had ended without agreement.
