Increased Flyovers Cited

MOSCOW () -- Russia said Tuesday it was concerned by a sharp increase in flights by foreign military aircraft along its northwestern border over the past year.

A Foreign Ministry statement cited figures saying 1,758 such flights had been registered around the Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad in 1995 after 724 the year before. Danish F-16 pilots had even imitated attacks near the border, provoking an alert by Russian aviation, it said.

"The activity of foreign military aircraft near our borders clearly doesn't help the development of mutual understanding and good neighborly relations," said Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Demurin.
