Ilyushenko: 2 Charges

MOSCOW () -- Russia's former acting prosecutor general Alexei Ilyushenko has been charged with bribetaking and the abuse of power and office, the Prosecutor General's Office told Interfax on Friday.

The department opened a criminal case against Ilyushenko on Feb. 13. He was arrested two days later and put in Lefortovo prison, where he remains in custody. Media reports have alleged that Ilyushenko took a bribe to arrange a major oil contract for a company in which his wife was an executive.

Ilyushenko's attorney, Alexander Asnis, told Interfax Friday that he believes the charges against his client were forged by officials of the Federal Security Service, with whom he had conflicts while he was acting prosecutor.
