Hartford Blanked By Bruins

HARTFORD, Connecticut -- Bill Ranford made 20 saves, and the Boston Bruins scored a goal in each period in a 3-0 victory over the Hartford Whalers.

Rick Zombo, Rick Tocchet and Ted Donato had goals as the Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak on Wednesday night and won for only the third time in 10 games (3-6-1).

Ranford earned his 12th career shutout, but it was Hartford backup goaltender Jason Muzzatti who was busier as the Whalers were outshot 32-20.

The outcome spoiled the homecoming for the Whalers, who came off a West Coast swing with their most successful road trip in team history (5-1).

Kings 2, Sabres 2. In Buffalo, New York, the Sabres gave up the first two goals before Rob Ray and Pat LaFontaine helped them to the tie.

Los Angeles was without superstar Wayne Gretzky, sidelined with a bruised hip sustained Tuesday night against Detroit. Gretzky has been the subject of trade rumors that had him leaving the Kings for a Stanley Cup contender.

Yanic Perreault and Eric Lacroix scored 38 seconds apart for the Kings, who have won just two of their last 17 games (2-11-4).

Flyers 4, Panthers 2. In Miami, John LeClair and Anatoli Semenov scored in the first 10 minutes of the second period for Philadelphia.

Maple Leafs 4, Sharks 3. At Toronto, Mats Sundin's backhander with 7:33 remaining won it.

Mike Gartner claimed his 26th and 27th goals for the Leafs, who have won two straight after a 2-8-3 slide.

Oilers 3, Ducks 2. In Edmonton, Alberta, the Oilers scored three quick goals in the second period for their fourth win over Anaheim this season.

Glenn Anderson got his 900th point as an Oiler and his 496th NHL goal.
