Finland Fine for Athlet

HELSINKI, Finland () -- Top decathlete Eduard Hamalainen of Belarus will represent Finland from 1997 onward.

An agreement signed Monday between the Finnish Track and Field Association and its Belarus counterpart said Hamalainen is allowed to compete for Finland one year after his last appearance for Belarus, which will be this summer's Olympic games in Atlanta.

Hamalainen is expected to be American world record holder Dan O'Brien's top challenger for the gold medal.

Hamalainen's grandparents are of Finnish ancestry, and as a boy he said he hoped to compete for Finland. He has lived and trained in Finland since last year, coached by his father.
