Expulsions On the Rise

MOSCOW () -- Russia is tightening controls on foreigners and expelled 223 in January, more than twice as many as during the same period last year, Interfax said Wednesday.

Vladimir Ivanov, head of the Interior Ministry's department for visas and registration, also said crimes against foreigners in January had doubled, up to 63 compared with 37 in January 1995.

Most of the foreigners expelled in January came from Mongolia, following a request by the Mongolian government to search for and expel Mongolian citizens illegally staying in Russia.

In 1995, Russia expelled 1,700 foreigners, most of them Chinese and Vietnamese traders who entered illegally.
