Death Penalty Urged

MANILA () -- A Philippine senator Tuesday demanded the death penalty for negligent owners of ships involved in disasters after 70 people died in a ferry sinking.

"They must be stopped permanently from killing our poor countrymen who can't afford more seaworthy vessels," Nikki Coseteng said in a statement. "Owners of ships which sink should be punished with death."

Officials blame aging rickety boats, gross overcrowding, ill-trained and undisciplined crews, disregard for safety and 20 or so typhoons a year for the 100 sea accidents that occur here annually.
