De Klerk: Future Dim

PRETORIA, South Africa () -- National Party leader Frederik de Klerk publicly conceded what was obvious to many Friday: In the new South Africa, with the black majority in power, the future is none too bright for the party that foisted constitutional white supremacy on the country.

The former president announced that his party was actively seeking new partners, either for a broad alliance against the ruling African National Congress or for an outright merger.

The party is even prepared to abandon its name, said de Klerk, who serves as one of Mandela's two deputies.
