Cold Kills in Ukraine

KIEV () -- Hundreds of people have frozen to death in Ukraine's parks, doorways and underground passages in the last few months in one of the coldest winters in decades, officials said Tuesday.

Government officials said there was no nationwide total for deaths from exposure, but regional officials are reporting unusually high figures. Most of the victims were homeless men.

In the usually temperate Crimean peninsula, at least 89 people have died from the cold this winter. In the industrialized eastern city of Dnipropetrovsk officials reported 84 deaths this winter.
