Christopher in Mideast

GAZA () -- U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher urged Palestinian President Yasser Arafat on Wednesday to ensure the PLO removes clauses from its 1964 covenant calling for Israel's destruction.

Christopher met Arafat for about 50 minutes at a guest house in Beit Hanoun village just inside the Palestinian-ruled Gaza Strip.

After the talks, Christopher was due to travel to Tel Aviv to brief Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres on his meeting with Syrian President Hafez al-Assad in Damascus on Tuesday.

Christopher persuaded Assad to send a delegation to resume negotiations with Israel at a venue outside Washington on Feb. 26.
