British Home Stores Chain To Open Branch in Moscow

British Home Stores, Britain's equivalent to American bargain-basement department store chains like Woolworth's, plans to open a store in Moscow by early May, a company spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The store will be situated at an as- yet-undisclosed location on Novy Arbat in downtown Moscow and will offer the standard British Home Stores, or BhS, selection of mid-priced BhS-brand clothes and home supplies as well as various kinds of lighting equipment, company spokeswoman Hayley Leed said.

BhS's move into Moscow is a result of the city's "market potential," Leed said in a telephone interview from London.

Sister company Mothercare already operates a store in the Valdai Centre on Novy Arbat.

The chain, which runs more than 190 stores in Britain, Western Europe and the Middle East, will operate its Moscow store with a local franchisee, Leed said.

Nearly 90 percent of the store's customers are "family-oriented" women over the age of 30, she added.

BhS is part of the British holding company Store House Group, which also includes Mothercare, a clothing store for infants, and Blazer, a menswear store. It was founded in 1928.

Leed had no information on how many employees BhS will hire in Moscow or how large the store will be.

Most BhS stores in the United Kingdom consist of only one or two stories, she said.
