Bread Prices Rise

YEREVAN, Armenia ( -- Bread prices have risen in Armenia, while in neighboring Georgia officials said prices would go up in two weeks. UN officials warned that the two impoverished economies were on the verge of crisis.

Government ministers in both countries said the price hikes were caused by a combination of higher world prices for wheat and fewer humanitarian aid donations from Europe.

In Yerevan, a kilogram-loaf of wheat bread rose in price Thursday from roughly 33 to 40 cents. Average salary in Armenia, a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus Mountains, is equivalent to $12 to $15 a month.
