Belarussian Men Top World Biathlon

RUHPOLDING, Germany -- The Belarussian men's and the German women's teams of four have both won gold at the biathlon World Championships.

With perfect shooting and no penalty minutes Tuesday, the Belarus foursome of Petr Ivashko, Oleg Ryshenkov, Alexander Popov, Vadim Sashurin, won the 10 kilometer race in 26 minutes 05.6 seconds.

Russia took silver with Vladimir Dratshev, Pavel Mouslimov, Viktor Maigurov, Sergei Rojkov with a time of 26:37.9 after two penalty minutes.

Italy overcame three penalty minutes with the team of Rene Cattarinussi, Hubert Leitgeb, Pieralberto Carrara, Patrick Favre in at 26:49.8 to salvage bronze.

In the women's 7.5 kilometer race, Germany's Katrin Apel, Simone Greiner-Petter-Memm, Uschi Disl, Petra Behle timed in at 23:23.6 to lead the pack despite two penalty minutes for shooting errors.

The Ukraine won silver with the team of Nina Lemesch, Jelena Petrowa, Tatjana Vodopianova, Yelena Zubrilova at 24:22.7 with no penalties.

And France, with three penalty minutes, took bronze with the team of Emmanuelle Claret, Anne Briand, Florence Baverel, Corinne Niogret in at 24:25.9.


Kazakhstan's Pavel Riabinine beat China's Qu Donghai in the men's 15-kilometer cross-country race Tuesday in the Asian Winter Games. Skiing events are being held in Yabuli, 200 kilometers southeast of Harbin, China, the games' center.

Riabinine finished the 15 kilometers in 40 minutes, 19.1 seconds. Qu was 22.6 seconds behind in 40:41.7. Kazakhstan's Vladimir Bortsov took the bronze medal in 41:04.2.
