Asprilla, Curle Charged After Clashes

LONDON -- Newcastle's Faustino Asprilla and Manchester City defender Keith Curle have been charged with misconduct following their clashes during a Premier League match.

"It is clear both players have a case to answer," English FA spokeswoman Clare Tomlinson said Monday after senior FA officials studied video of Saturday's match.

"Both players have 14 days to answer the charges and Asprilla has already pleaded his innocence," she said.

Colombian international Asprilla was first seen to elbow Curle in the face after the City captain grabbed him from behind as the two challenged for the ball.

Then both were involved in a tussle after the final whistle during which Asprilla appeared to butt Curle.

Asprilla, playing only his second full match for Premier League leader Newcastle, denied there had been any intent to injure Curle.

Asprilla, who joined Newcastle from Parma of Italy for a club record ?7.5 million ($11.5 million) earlier this month, was charged with two counts of misconduct and Curle with one.

Referee Martin Bodenham took no action over either incident.

Asprilla scored Newcastle's second goal, his first the club, in a 3-3 draw.

The Colombian, commenting on the first incident on Sunday, said: "I was trying to push him away and trying to escape. He had his arms around me and I wanted to get free.

"All I was trying to do was avoid him. I was pushing and pushing but I didn't know I had hit him in the face.

"It certainly wasn't my intention to elbow him -- and what I did wasn't that strong."

Asprilla did not comment on the second incident, while Curle has refused to comment on either.

It is understood that Curle has been reported for misconduct for the tussle after the final whistle.
