Antarctic Station Shu

MOSCOW () -- Russia has closed down its Antarctic research station Vostok after nearly 40 years, Itar-Tass said Wednesday.

Russian scientists, together with colleagues from the United States and France in recent years, have used the Vostok station as a base to observe the state of the ozone layer and conduct drilling of the ice-cap to monitor long-term climactic changes.

"Because of an absence of financing we have had to close the station," Anatoly Yakovlev, press secretary of the Russian state weather forecasting center, told Itar-Tass. The 12 Russian scientists who had been working at the center had been transferred to the U.S. station at McMurdo Sound, he added.
