3 Labour Plots Strategy

LONDON () -- Leaders of Britain's opposition Labour party met Friday to plot strategy for the next election, fresh from a convincing by-election success that cut Prime Minister John Major's parliamentary majority to four.

The resounding victory in the former mining constituency of Hemsworth in northern England was a big relief to Tony Blair following the toughest two weeks of his 18-month leadership.

Although Hemsworth is a safe Labour seat, Blair's camp was worried that controversy over the party's education policy and the election debut of the breakaway Socialist Labour Party would siphon off Labour's support.
