1,700 Distillers Shut

MOSCOW () --In a crackdown on unlicensed alcohol sales, Moscow police shut down 1,700 illegal distilleries last year and confiscated 6 million liters of spirits and their substitutes, the Interior Ministry said.

In a report cited by Interfax, the ministry said Monday that police efforts to control commodity markets also have resulted in the discovery of 1,200 cases of production and sales of defective goods, 4,800 illegal businesses and 31,000 cases of customer deception in 1995.

The alcohol market is particularly unruly in Russia, and many underground distilleries produce alcoholic beverages, often of a very poor quality that may cause serious illness or even death.
