Unser Sr. Survives

SANTA FE, New Mexico () -- Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser Sr. and a friend emerged unscathed after surviving nearly 36 hours on a freezing Colorado mountain after their snowmobiles broke down.

Unser, 63, and Robert Gayton, 36, battled exhaustion, hypothermia and frostbite but managed to dig a snow cave for shelter and on Sunday walked 22 kilometers to safety through waist-deep snow.

They survived Friday night by digging into the snow under a tree.

"Everything that usually happens easy just kept getting worse," said Unser.
