U.N. Awaits Nominees

UNITED NATIONS () -- African governments were expected Friday to submit two or three new candidates for the top UN post after Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali suspended his candidacy in the face of strong U.S. opposition. Boutros-Ghali said he remains a candidate for a second term, and supporters in Europe and elsewhere are said to be urging him to hang on.

But sources close to Boutros-Ghali, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the 74-year-old Egyptian was already considering options for a "diplomatic exit.''
