Ukraine to Host Military Exercises

KIEV -- Ukraine will host a large-scale joint military exercise with East European and NATO troops next July, an official said Monday.

The exercise is to be held under the auspices of NATO's Partnership for Peace program of cooperation between the U.S.-led alliance and former Soviet bloc countries, said Sergei Mokrynets, head of the foreign relations department of the Ukrainian Army's General Staff.

Mokrynets said more than 1,700 are likely to be involved, of them 600 to 700 in actual training and more than 1,000 as technical support personnel.

Almost all the countries neighboring on Ukraine, as well as many NATO nations, are expected to send their troops for the exercise, which will be held at the Yavorivsky training grounds in western Ukraine, he said.

The first former Soviet republic to join Partnership for Peace, Ukraine held two joint exercises in the framework of that program in 1995 and 1996.
