Trans-Dniester Votes

TIRASPOL, Moldova () -- The incumbent leader of the breakaway Trans-Dniester region easily won re-election as president and said Monday he would continue his push for independence.

President Igor Smirnov won 72 percent of the vote in Sunday's balloting compared to 20 percent for businessman Vladimir Malakhov, according to the election commission in Trans-Dniester, a region in eastern Moldova populated mainly by ethnic Slavs.

The election was seen as an attempt to cement Trans-Dniester's independence from Moldova. Trans-Dniester's leaders proclaimed independence in 1990 amid fears that Moldova planned to reunite with neighboring Romania.
