Reindeer Still Starving

MOSCOW -- Reindeer in Russia's far northeastern region of Chukotka are continuing to starve by the thousands after heavy rains followed by hard frosts have encased their pastures in ice, officials said Tuesday.

Nearly 10,000 are thought to have died so far and thousands more are threatened, said Karl Smolikov, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations in Moscow.

The region has about 240,000 reindeer and local officials fear that 30,000 could eventually die of starvation, Itar-Tass said.

Herdsman are driving the reindeer to distant, unfrozen pastures and already have moved 60,000, it said.
