Reactor Closed At Chernobyl

KIEV -- Ukraine closed one of the two working reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power station on Saturday, taking a big step towards keeping promises to shut the site of the world's biggest nuclear accident by the year 2000.

"Everything went to schedule. Reactor No. 1 was shut down at 10 p.m.," Sergei Parashin said by telephone from the Chernobyl plant, about 140 kilometers from Kiev.

Ukraine has promised to close the whole Chernobyl station by 2000 in exchange for some $3.1 billion in grants and credits from the Group of Seven industrialized states.
