Post-Soviet Passports

MOSCOW () -- President Boris Yeltsin has signed a decree to introduce new passports to replace the current ones which still have the insignia of the old Soviet Union, the Interfax news agency said Saturday.

Yeltsin ordered the government to approve the design of the new passports by March 1 so that distribution can get fully under way in 1997, the report said.

There will be four types of passports introduced under Yeltsin's decree: regular, diplomatic, government and passports for Russian sailors.
