'Liquidator' Strike

ST. PETERSBURG () -- Two of the "liquidators" who cleaned up after the deadly blaze at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, suffering severe radiation damage, are on hunger strike to obtain the compensation due to them.

Yury Malarov, 57, an engineer, and Valery Sokolov, 48, who both spent two months at the power station in Ukraine cleaning up after the disaster, have taken nothing but water for the past week.

"For nine months we have been receiving only 300,000 rubles [about $45] per month, many of us live in communal apartments, and they have closed the only clinic in the city which specialized in our diseases," said Alexander Velikin, an official of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russia-Chernobyl association.
