AvtoVAZ Boosts Ouput

n MOSCOW () -- Russia's heavily indebted car maker AvtoVAZ plans to boost output to 680,000 cars this year, above 654,000 initially planned, and to raise it further in 1997 to 701,000, the company said Tuesday.

AvtoVAZ chief spokesman Vladimir Isakov said the plant, where Lada and Niva cars are made, was working normally despite debts to the state budget, public sectors and suppliers totalling about 10 trillion rubles ($1.8 billion).

"Car-making is perfectly organized, output is rising, sales are up, there are no strikes. The problem is that current tax payments and debt repayment eat up all of our profits," Isakov said.
