Annan Officially Picked

UNITED NATIONS -- Kofi Annan, the Ghanaian head of UN peacekeeping, will be formally appointed on Tuesday as UN secretary general by the General Assembly, the last step before he begins his five-year term Jan. 1.

Mindful that Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, in his bid for a second term, was torpedoed by the United States against the wishes of most members, the assembly intends to adopt a second resolution commending his accomplishments.
