U.S. Prepared to Veto

UNITED NATIONS () -- The United States is standing firm on its threat to veto a second term for Boutros Boutros-Ghali as the Security Council meets Monday to begin selecting a secretary general for the United Nations.

But China, which also holds a Security Council veto, repeated its support for the 74-year-old Egyptian diplomat, citing his endorsement by the Organization of African Unity.

The nomination of a new secretary general is the only item on the council's agenda, but Council President Nugroho Wisnumurti of Indonesia said he was unsure if a vote would come Monday.
