U.S. Loses Seat

UNITED NATIONS () -- In a surprise move, the United States has been ousted from a key United Nations finance committee, mainly because of its $1.4 billion debt to the world body, United States officials and diplomats said.

Instead, France and New Zealand on Friday were given seats on the prestigious 16-member Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions, which plays an important role in reviewing the UN's $1.3 billion annual budget.

The United States owes the world body about $1.4 billion for past dues and current and past peacekeeping costs -- more than half of the UN's entire debt.
