UEFA Head Accused

CANCUN, Mexico () -- South African officials plan to lodge a protest over the alleged racist remarks made by UEFA president Lennart Johansson.

Johansson, head of European soccer's governing body and considered a challenger to Joao Havelange for the FIFA presidency, was quoted by the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet as making racist comments while on a visit to South Africa.

"When I arrived in South Africa, the whole room was full with blackies and it gets damned dark when they're sitting together,'' Aftonbladet quoted Johansson as saying. "If they also are angry, then it's not so damned merry.''

Johansson has apologized but said he doesn't remember using those words.
