TNT Express Unveils Customs Warehouse

Express courier company TNT Express Worldwide announced the inauguration of its own customs warehouse Thursday and said this would slash average delivery time by 24 hours and shipment costs by up to 50 percent.

TNT representatives told a news conference that Russia's growing importance in the company's 200 country network had necessitated changes that also included the creation of five freight handling centers on the Helsinki-Moscow highway.

"These operational developments are the first in a number to make the company the industry leader in Russia by the year 2000," said Simon Brady, TNT's head of operations for Russia. Both DHL and Fedex already have customs warehouses in Moscow.

He would not say what percent of the express delivery market was held by his company, but said it was aiming to grab 25 percent over the coming year.

Brady said that though Russia's sheer geographical size had so far proved to be an obstacle to developing an European-level delivery structure in the country, plans were on to increase the number of destinations served by TNT. At present the company makes deliveries to 152 Russian cities with air links to Moscow.

"We are interested in deepening our connection with the Russian postal system," said Brady, adding that TNT, which is partially owned by the Swedish and Dutch postal departments, is planning to cooperate with the Russian postal system for delivering to remote areas in Russia.
