Russia Fires Missile

MOSCOW () -- Russia has successfully test-fired an RS-12M Topol (Poplar) intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk test site in the far north, Itar-Tass said.

Itar-Tass quoted the Strategic Missile Forces commander, General Igor Sergeyev, as saying that the servicemen who launched the missile Saturday had "demonstrated irreproachable training and professionalism."

Russia has yet to ratify the START II strategic arms reduction treaty with Washington which would slash U.S. and Russian warheads to about 3,000 on each side by 2003.

U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry traveled to Moscow last month trying to persuade the State Duma to approve the treaty, ratified by the U.S. Senate earlier this year. The Duma, dominated by President Boris Yeltsin's opponents and deeply suspicious of planned NATO expansion into eastern Europe, appeared to be unconvinced.
