Reactor to Shut Down

KIEV () -- Reactor No. 1 at the ill-fated Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine, will be shut down Saturday as the government has promised but the closure may only be temporary, officials said here.

"We cannot rule out that after repairs and improvements to security, No. 1 reactor ... might go back into service if there is a cold winter," the state committee for atomic energy exploitation said in a statement Wednesday.

The same committee also proposed to restart the No. 2 reactor at Chernobyl, which had to be shut down in 1991 after a fire, the statement added.
