Potanin: No Emission

MOSCOW () -- First Prime Minister Vladimir Potanin said Friday the government will not bow to legislative pressure to print more money to cover the budget deficit, Interfax reported.

"The government does not have plans to issue more money," Potanin said. "The government will not resort to such a measure as a cash emission and breach the monetary and credit policy."

Interfax said Potanin also denied rumors that the government planned to issue new ruble banknotes starting Monday. He said any such change would be announced well in advance, and that Russia has outgrown the times "when we could change banknotes in a couple of days."
