Paulus Crushes Coetzer 6-1, 6-2

PHILADELPHIA -- Austrian Barbara Paulus mixed an aggressive baseline game with crisp volleys to crush Amanda Coetzer of South Africa 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round of the Advanta Tennis Championships.

The win was important for Paulus, 16th on the WTA Tour points list heading into next week's year-end championships at Madison Square Garden.

The top 16 points-getters and one alternate qualify, and Coetzer is ranked 14th but could be passed by Paulus and Mary Joe Fernandez, who is also playing here.

Paulus, seeded eighth in the field of 32, breezed through the first set before Coetzer won the first two games of the second set. Paulus then won the next six games to close out the match.

"I have to make some points in this tournament," Paulus said.

Former world doubles champion Guy Forget had to withdraw Monday from the ATP Tour doubles tournament in Hartford due to a recurring knee injury.

Forget, of France, and Swiss partner, Jakob Hlasek, were seeded third at the Phoenix/ATP Tour World Doubles Championship, which begins Wednesday. ()
