Palestinian Killed by Israeli Troops

KHARBATA, West Bank -- A Palestinian demonstrator was killed and 13 wounded Sunday when Israeli troops opened fire to disperse a protest against the seizure of land to expand a Jewish settlement, hospital sources said.

Atallah Amireh, 36, died after being shot in the chest during the protest near the West Bank town of Ramallah, Ramallah hospital director Shawki Harb said. He said 13 other Palestinian demonstrators were shot but their injuries were not life-threatening.

An Israeli army spokesman said eight Palestinians had been wounded.

Witnesses said some 70 Palestinians were taking part in the demonstration near Ramallah against the confiscation of land around the villages Kharbata, Bilyana and Deir Qadis to expand the Jewish settlement of Kyriat Sefer.

They said the demonstrators sought to halt work begun by Israeli bulldozers on 500 hectares of their land to expand Kyriat Sefer, along the "Green Line" separating Israel from the Palestinian territories seized in 1967.

Israel's prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pledged to expand Jewish settlement activities.

In late September, 85 people died in the worst outbreak of violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip since 1967.

?Netanyahu says he is confident that peace talks can resume with Syria in January or even earlier, Israeli official sources said Sunday.

The remark was in response to a statement Friday by Syrian Foreign Minister Faruq al-Shara in Paris that he was optimistic, following intervention by the United States, that the talks on ice since February could resume early next year.
