Ohio State Beats Indiana 27-17 To Clinch Berth in Rose Bowl

NEW YORK -- Ohio State is in, and Lou Holtz is probably out at Notre Dame.

The Buckeyes are headed to the Rose Bowl for the first time in 12 years after Mate Finkes' 45-yard touchdown fumble return with 6:18 left gave them a 27-17 win over Indiana on Saturday.

"Finkes made the most important play of his career," Ohio State coach John Cooper said.

At South Bend, Holtz dodged questions about whether he's decided to call it quits after 11 seasons.

After Saturday, who's out of the big bowl picture?

Start with No. 6 North Carolina (8-2), which lost 20-17 to No. 24 Virginia. Then there's No. 16 Michigan (7-3), a 29-17 loser to No. 11 Penn State, and probably Miami (6-3), defeated 21-7 by No. 21 Virginia Tech.

Who's in? No. 11 Penn State (9-2), which plays Michigan State next week, and No. 14 Notre Dame (7-2) are among the top contenders for the at-large berths to the Fiesta and Orange bowls.

No. 1 Florida 52, South Carolina 25. At Gainesville, Florida, Danny Wuerffel (11-of-34 for 290 yards) had a bad day but threw two TD passes and Fred Taylor had three TDs for the Gators (10-0).
