Leone, 25, who didn't even qualify for the Italian Olympic team, broke clear in the 25th mile to handily defeat Turbo Tumo of Ethiopia.

"I came here to make an experience and instead I have a win," said Leone, competing in only his fifth marathon.

There was also a surprise in the women's event as Anuta Catuna of Romania, who was 44th in the Atlanta Olympics, came on strong to win in 2:28:18. Catuna was fourth in New York in 1994.
