Nixon Mulled Jackson

WASHINGTON () -- Richard Nixon's 1972 re-election campaign considered secretly funding the Reverend Jesse Jackson as an independent candidate to draw votes away from the Democrats, The Washington Post said Thursday.

Jackson was among names mentioned in September 1971 in recently released tapes of the president and his aides discussing a scheme to fund a black candidate in the race, the daily said.
