Nigerian Crash Probed

LAGOS, Nigeria () -- Fishermen in a lagoon east of Lagos began retrieving handbags, clothing, and body parts Saturday from the wreckage of a Nigerian jet that plunged in flames into the muddy water.

The government promised a "high-powered'' inquiry into Thursday evening's crash, whose wreckage was not discovered until Friday afternoon when searchers in helicopters spotted the Boeing 727 sticking out of the lagoon. Witnesses around the village of Imota, about 65 kilometers east of Lagos, described seeing a ball of flames before the jet carrying 141 people crashed. There were no survivors.
