New Belarus Minister

MINSK, Belarus () -- President Alexander Lukashenko named a temporary replacement for the Belarussian defense minister who was fired after showing up at a ceremony too drunk to read a speech, Interfax said Monday.

Lukashenko appointed chief of general staff, Lieutenant General Alexander Chumakov, the acting defense minister of the former Soviet republic, the report said.

He replaces Lieutenant General Leonid Maltsev, who was removed by Lukashenko's guards from the podium during an incoherent speech on Friday at the Minsk Medical Institute.
